International and National Contexts

For many Danes, the national flag and white village churches are the epitome of Danishness. Both the churches and flag with its white cross on a red background are Christian as well as national symbols. But have the national and the religious always been so closely linked?

Actually, the history of the Danish church was international from the beginning, and the Reformation rapidly became an international movement. The 500th anniversary of the Reformation will therefore be celebrated by Protestants all over the world. So what kind of impact did reformatory thinking and the new Lutheran religious society have on national issues in Denmark?
