Gender and Gender Roles

Most people support the idea of equality of the sexes in Denmark today. Everyone should have equal opportunities to live the life they choose. It is not only socially acceptable but also economically possible to live as a single parent, also due to state support. But many still want to live in a secure, loving relationship, usually with children. Even though living arrangements and the social system are markedly different to Luther’s time, our view of gender and relationships has clear historical roots – also in the Reformation era.

What did the Reformation actually mean in terms of gender and gender roles? Was the patriarchal structure of society reinforced, relegating women to the role of housewife and mother? Or were there aspects of the Reformation that contributed to greater equality between men and women?
