Today the goal of the Danish school system is stipulated as being to give pupils ‘knowledge and skills’. School is also to prepare children for ‘participation, co-responsibility, rights and duties in a free, democratic society’. Schooling in Denmark has always been aimed at learning skills and educating pupils as human beings and citizens. Until 1975, the law also stated that school values were to be based on Christianity. Schools in Denmark are in many ways born out of the church – and the message of the Reformation that everyone should be able to read the word of God.
